Into the Mountain Heart!
Guided by the voices and stories of Native people, park rangers and historians
The North Cascades Highway, Route 20 in Washington State, travels a corridor of rich diversity - through broad agricultural valleys and a narrow river gorge, through lush riparian lowlands and some of Washington's most rugged peaks, through the temperate rainforest and the dry grass and ranch lands of the Methow Valley. Along the way, its winding path speaks of glaciations, changed river courses, Native cultures, fisheries and trade routes, National Parks, National Recreation Areas, National Forests, as well as immense and intricate hydroelectric dams, development, and the modern connection between this wilderness heart and the heart of Seattle.
Ultimately, the highway is a ribbon spanning geologic time and cultures. In the most true sense, State Route 20 connects both sides of the mountains, as the strong Skagit River which it follows much of its way has done for millennia' serving as a portal, a way into the Cascade mountain heart. Guided by the voices and stories of Native people, park rangers, historians, and others who know well this river and mountain corridor, the hour long audio program highlights the natural, scenic, cultural, and historic areas between Sedro-Woolley and Washington Pass. The audio program is divided into four categories, with narrative threads and themes binding the sections.
