Enhance your holiday travel experience by downloading this audio tour and exploring Ohio.
This program was designed to be played in your vehicle while driving interstate 70 through Ohio, following the path of two older roads: Zanes Trace and the National Road. Zanes Trace was the first path cut through the Ohio wilderness by settlers. It entered the state at Wheeling and proceeded west until todays Zanesville. Then it veered southwest, connecting with the Ohio River.
Zanes Trace was followed by the National Road, Americas first federally financed interstate highway. The National Road connected the east coast to Americas west and was an important factor in opening the frontier to settlementit also helped unite east and west into one nation. Today, we can still spot remnants of the National Road, such as, the towns spaced uniformly along the route, about the distance between stagecoach stops.
Interstate 70 takes us through coal mining country, past a region of prehistoric mounds, through a natural prairie considered by the Nature Conservancy as one of the twelve last great places in the western hemisphere, along a corridor deemed the silicon valley of the 19th century, and past a city founded by Quakers that became known as the cradle of recorded jazz. It was once a region of cowboys and Indians (honest!) and the area where legendary Johnny Appleseed first made his appearance.
And all along the way are stories of people who have made their home in central Ohio. This program is an introduction to life along the Ohio section of Interstate 70 and can be listed to anywhere along the routeor in anticipation of taking this trip.
This tour covers... Buckeyes, Battles & Strong Water, An Old Road Across Ohio, Clues Through the Window, Fast Food and Hard Cider.
